Traffic Marshal (also called banksman) training covers safely directing vehicle movements on site and keeping pedestrians separated from moving plant and vehicles — a legal requirement on most sites with vehicle traffic.
Anyone directing vehicle movements on a construction site, or responsible for a site's traffic management plan. Most sites with reversing vehicles, deliveries, or shared vehicle/pedestrian routes need at least one trained traffic marshal on duty.
Site traffic management plans, safe systems of work around vehicles, standard hand signals for directing plant and vehicles, segregating pedestrians from vehicle routes, and site-specific risk assessment for traffic movements.
The online awareness course takes around 2–3 hours. Some employers also require a practical, site-specific induction alongside the online theory.
Certificates are typically treated as valid for 3 years, though this isn't set by a single piece of legislation — check your employer's policy for their refresher schedule.
