The SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is a 5-day course for site managers and project managers in the UK construction industry. It is the most widely recognised management safety qualification on UK sites.
SMSTS is aimed at anyone who manages or supervises construction work — site managers, project managers, contracts managers, and site agents. Many main contractors require SMSTS as a minimum for anyone in a management role on their projects.
The course covers health and safety legislation, risk assessment, accident prevention, CDM 2015 regulations, environmental awareness, and the responsibilities of site managers. It includes both theory and practical case studies.
The SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years. Before it expires, you can take the 2-day SMSTS Refresher course to renew for another 5 years — much cheaper and shorter than retaking the full 5-day course.
Prices range from £285 to £425 depending on location and provider. Online delivery tends to be cheaper.
Online SMSTS is delivered live via Zoom or Teams — same certificate, same content, typically £30–£80 cheaper. Classroom is better if you prefer face-to-face learning and networking with other managers.
SMSTS alone does not give you a CSCS card. For a Black CSCS Card (manager level), you need an NVQ Level 6 or 7 in Construction Site Management plus the CITB Managers HS&E test. However, SMSTS is a prerequisite for many NVQ routes.
