NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications that prove your competence in a specific construction role. They are assessed on-site — no classroom attendance required.
An NVQ is a competence-based qualification assessed through observation and evidence of your work. Unlike classroom courses, NVQs prove you can actually do the job — not just that you know the theory.
Level 2 — skilled worker (e.g., bricklayer, carpenter). Level 3 — advanced craft or supervisor. Level 4 — technical management. Level 5 — site management (bridging Level 4 and full site management). Level 6 — construction site management. Level 7 — senior management / strategic management.
A qualified assessor visits you on your site (or works remotely for Level 5/6/7). They observe your work, review evidence you have gathered, and ask professional discussion questions. You build a portfolio of evidence over the assessment period.
Level 2 — typically 12–16 weeks. Level 3 — 14–20 weeks. Level 4 — 16–22 weeks. Level 5 — 16–24 weeks. Level 6 — 16–24 weeks. Level 7 — 20–30 weeks. The speed depends on how quickly you can gather evidence and complete assessor visits.
NVQ Level 2 — £750. NVQ Level 3 — £950. NVQ Level 4 — £1,100. NVQ Level 5 — £1,195. NVQ Level 6 — £1,250. NVQ Level 7 — £1,450.
